Remembering Brother Michael Shay
On July 31, Michael Shay was suddenly taken from us. A longterm union member, to many he was a regular feature pre-curtain and during
intermissions at the Orpheum and other theaters, and for events at Moscone Center.
His absence especially leaves a significant gap up in the Balcony at the Orpheum, where Michael built special relationships with fellow
ushers and regular audience members, as well as innumerable first-timers.

Remembering Sister Edvida Moore
In June, Local B18 received word of the death of Edvida Moore. Always diligent and attentive when ushering at the Orpheum and Golden Gate Theaters,
her bright smile and cheerful greeting of guests is something that will be sincerely missed as members return to work at those venues.

Remembering Brother David Frisella
Dave Frisella, a truly nice man and Supervisor of the 2nd and King gate at the Giants' ballpark, passed away on February 3.
No matter how busy, he had a smile for everyone, and a kind word or wink.
And he always seemed to make working any position at the gate a "suggestion" you wanted to take.
Forever Giant, Dave will be sorely missed.

Remembering Brother David Meraz
B18 notes, with great sadness, the death on December 10 of David Meraz, a long-time usher at the Curran and for BroadwaySF.
He was a regular at the Golden Gate Theater, where The Last Ship was his last show.
David greeted everyone—fellow ushers and audience members alike—with his trademark “thank you for coming.”
In March, David quietly celebrated his 40th anniversary as a member of the Local.

Chase Center Job Offers
Dear B18 Members,
If you receive a job offer from the Warriors at the new Chase Center and have decided to work there, please inform
Member Services,
and click this link
https://organizing.iatse-intl.org/AuthForm.aspx?CID=250
to complete an IATSE Digital Authorization for Representation card. Fill out the entire form:
under “Current Crafts” put your job title from the offer letter (e.g. ticket taker, usher, etc.).
Please keep in mind that, despite the information in the Warrior’s offer letters about wages and other conditions, much of that will change depending on what is negotiated by B18.
The Chase Arena will be a union house and Local B18 will currently represent all Ticket Sellers, Ticket Takers, and Elevator Operators. Another union is challenging our Local's right to represent the Ushers. We need your support!
We strongly encourage all B18 Members to accept the offer by the Warriors and fill out the IATSE Digital Authorization for Representation cards so B18 can negotiate on your behalf, just as we do all over San Francisco.
Here is the link to the Authorization for Representation cards again:
https://organizing.iatse-intl.org/AuthForm.aspx?CID=250
San Francisco is B18’s town! Let's work together for the best guest experience at the new Chase Center.

Assessment Fees
This notice was e-mailed to all members with an address on file and sent through US Mail to those who did not.
Dear fellow B18 member,
As part of membership in Local B18, 1% Assessments are due by May 1, 2018. If you have already submitted your payment, or if you have opted to have all your assessments deducted from your paycheck by your employer, please disregard the rest of this reminder and thank you!
What you owe in assemssments is based on your gross wages from the first Quarter of 2018, January 1 to March 31.
To calculate that 1%, multiply your total gross wages from B18 employers during that period by 0.01. For example:
if you made $825 in the past quarter, your formula would be:
825 x 0.01 = 8.25
So your 1% Assessment for Local B18 would be $8.25. If you didn't work at a B18 venue during the quarter,
you owe nothing in assessments. But please let the office know that.
Remit your payment by check or money order to:
IATSE Local B18
450 Harrison Street, #208
San Francisco, CA 94105
To arrange for online payment by credit/debit card, contact < membership@iatse-local-b18.org>. Include the amount of the assessment that you are paying. (Online payments are subject to a fee to recover what the Local is charged for online processing.)
Pursuant to Article X of our constitution and bylaws, a $2 per week late fee starts accruing on May 2 if an assessment payment is not received. The same section of the constitution mandates that any payments in default for more than 6 months prompts expulsion from the Local.
Fraternally,
Leontyne Mbele-Mbong
President

October Meeting Results
As had been announced in advance, a vote to restructure our dues and initiation fees took place at the General Meeting on Monday, October 9th, 2017.
There were two proposals presented to the membership: raising the initiation fee for new members from $60 to $100, and restructuring the dues system from the current three-tiered $42-$34-$20 quarterly dues to an annual $72 in dues and a 1% assessment of gross wages (capped at $200 annually).
We are pleased to announce that both proposals passed. The initiation increase proposal was approved with a vote of 29 for, 9 against, 2 abstentions, and 1 member not voting. Dues restructuring was approved with 30 for and 11 against.
This marks a new chapter for Local B18 and it’s members, as we can now push forward with training for our members, updating some of the old office technology, and continuing to grow through aggressive organizing, while embracing International President Loeb’s Four Pillars of Success: Leadership, Skills and Safety, Activism, and Communication.

2015 April =============================
Remembering Sister Agnes Chan
With sadness, B18 notes the death of Agnes Chan – friend, social observer, usher – on April 6. Born in San Francisco on October 3, 1917, she shared with us the last 15 years and the fourth career of her long life. On March 22 she sat her last guest and gave out her last program at the Orpheum, for the Sunday matinée of Dame Edna's farewell tour.
Agnes actually started ushering while she was earning her teaching credential in the 1950s. One of her classes required that students volunteer at a theater. She loved to tell people that it was the first dollar she got as a tip taking a patron to a seat at Mae West's show at The Geary that hooked her on ushering. ("That was great," she would say and then slyly add, ". . . and I saw the show for free.")
She also liked to say that being a teacher came in handy when dealing with some theater-goers. After retiring from teaching, Agnes regularly volunteered at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Orpheum and Cowell theaters, and the Opera House. She joined YBCA's House Staff and became a B18 member in 2000. Eventually "House-Right" would be her regular assignment throughout the city: at the Curran she was "right-wall", at the Orpheum "Door 1", and at YBCA "first door". And she could keep a running total of the people coming through her door, knowing exactly when she didn't have enough programs.
A celebration of the life and times of Agnes Chan was held in Golden Gate Park on April 27.

Remembering Brother Russell Dado
B18 notes with sadness the death of Russell Dado on September 21, at the age of 81. He joined the Union in 1994, and worked primarily at the War Memorial Opera House as the Box Office Ambassador.
For many audience members, Russell's cry of "curtain going up” was part of the ritual of being at the Opera or Ballet. David Gockley, General Director of SF Opera, said about Russell that "his care and concern for the patrons was exemplary and his pride in this company palpable at all times." The performance of Tosca on October 26 will be dedicated to his memory.

2014 July =============================
B18 is on the move!
(a message from the Business Agent went out in the mail and was posted here)
In early July, the management of the building we've been at on Mission Street for years told me that the B18 offices would have to move again by the end of July—this after we were relocated the same time last year. There would be no real space for us to move to within the building for 2-4 weeks and, on top of that, our next location would be in the basement at a significantly higher rent.
So I thought that it was time to bite the bullet and move from the old location. Starting in August, our office will be in the historic
Sailors' Union of the Pacific Building
450 Harrison Street, Room 208
San Francisco, CA 94105
I am still trying to work out the details for the August General Meeting. Please check back here for more information.
The Sailors' Union of the Pacific building was constructed in 1950, to provide a new home for the famous maritime union founded in 1885.
The building—and our new office—is a 4-block walk up 1st Street from Market.
Muni Metro has a stop served by the T and N lines at Folsom/Harrison on The Embarcadero. The Sailors' Union building is a shorter 5-block walk up Harrison Street from this stop. Or you can use the
10-Townsend or
12-Folsom/Pacific
to get within 2 very short blocks. Get off at the Muni stops on 2nd and Harrison and walk east on Harrison. (From Downtown, these routes have a south-bound stop just off of Market Street, on 2nd near Stevenson.)
Finally, there is usually metered street parking nearby.
Hope to see you soon at the new offices. By the way our telephone and fax numbers remain the same, though there may be a short disruption in service during the beginning of August.

Fraternally, Johnny Moreno, Business Agent - I.A.T.S.E. Local B18 2013 October ============================= Happy Trails to Brother Tom Mannion! Tom and his wife, Linda, have headed back to the East Coast. As Business Agent, Tom was a pioneer in helping organize our Union. As a member, for over 10 years, Tom continued to strive for a better union, one that fairly represented and better served it's members. He helped organize and lead Local B18's first By-Laws Committee since the 1980's, in the hopes that we would have a more relevant document that would suit our Union Members' needs. Because of Tom's tireless efforts, we will be voting on that new document in October of 2013. A big Thank You!, Tom, for your leadership and dedication to our Labor Union's cause. We wish you well in your future endeavors. 2013 September =============================

Membership Meetings October 7 & 21, 2013
September 18, 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters
A committee of Local B18 members volunteered and was assembled last spring to review the Constitution of our local and draft proposed amendments to it. The committee consulted with representatives from the I.A.T.S.E. International Office as well as representatives of other B locals within the union. The committee has recently completed their work and we are now ready to present these proposed changes to our membership for their review and vote.
As per our current Constitution, the proposed amendments are to be read before the membership at two consecutive meetings. After the second reading, the membership will cast their vote to accept or reject the proposed amendments.
Our local president has scheduled these meetings to be held at 6:30PM to 8:30PM on
OCTOBER 7th, 2013 and OCTOBER 21st, 2013.
The meetings will be held at the
MARINE FIREMEN’S UNION HALL
240 Second Street, San Francisco, CA 94105.
Our meetings will be held at this larger facility due to the expected turnout. (Refreshments will be served).
A question and answer session will follow each reading. Members attending will be provided with copies of the proposed amendments, as will those members wishing to vote by absentee ballot. If you wish to obtain an absentee ballot, you must notify the local, in writing, no later than October 7, 2013. Completed absentee ballots are to be returned to the local at the end of the business day by October 18, 2013. The membership will cast an up or down vote on each individual article of the Constitution. The vote will be taken following the second of the two scheduled readings.
Once the voting process is completed, our local will present the amended Constitution to the International Office for their final approval. Also, a standing local committee will be formed to insure that our Constitution is reviewed on a regular basis and kept up to date.
The Constitution Review Committee has worked diligently to insure that our local’s Constitution is current and that the administrative processes are efficient. We hope all members of Local B18 take the time to review this document and participate in the amendment process. We believe this will make our Union stronger going forward.
In solidarity,
Johnny Moreno Joe Scaroni
Business Agent Co-Chairman

2012 November =============================
Election Time!
International President Loeb has instructed each of our Local Unions to follow the AFL/CIO’s Labor 2012 election plan. Organized Labor is facing some of the most aggressive and destructive attacks in our history, and in order to combat these attacks and defeat them, we need to unite together. Each Local is being asked to organize its efforts from Leadership, Boards, Stewards, to each and every member.
In response to the AFL/CIO’s plan, Johnny Moreno will stand as Local B18’s "Local Union Coordinator" as the key contact for the local, and where all information from the District will initially go through.
Brothers Tom Mannion and Joe Scaroni have volunteered to be our “Production Site Coordinators” and will be responsible for distributing materials, postings, notices, etc. via member to member reach outs and communications.
If other members would also like to participate, please contact Business Agent Johnny Moreno at b18bizagt@sbcglobal.net or call 415-974-0860.
No To Prop 32!
Local 784 hosted a workshop against Prop 32 this past Monday on August 27th, where special guests Chuck Rocha and Steve Smith (California Labor Federation) gave an invaluable presentation on our next steps on how to get out the message to fight this clear attack against organized labor. Members Babette Ravanera, Tom Mannion, Joe Scaroni, Kathy Dere, and Johnny Moreno were present to represent Local B18, along with seven other local unions.
